Religion and Religiously

How often have we heard someone say something like, "He goes to the gym religiously" or "She checks up on her parents religiously." We know what that means. They do these things faithfully and consistently.
Here's my question. Do you practice your religion religiously? Just because one may "have a religion" does not mean they are faithful or consistent in their practice of it. It does not make it a priority in their lives. Oh how we need more Christians to practice Christianity religiously.
According to James 1:26, it is possible to have a useless religion. However, if we want to practice pure religion, we must strive to meet the needs of others and keep ourselves "unspotted from the world" (James 1:27). Remember, it does not matter how religious you are if you don't practice your religion religiously!

Just a note: I have heard that there are some now referring to our First Amendment right of freedom of religion as "the freedom to worship." We should be careful to point out that worship is a part of our religion and the First Amendment encompasses much more than that. Otherwise, the argument will eventually be made by those who oppose Christianity that certain aspects of our religion may be regulated by the state. May we ever be vigilant about this precious freedom.

Mountain

Lord, I've never moved a mountain and I guess I never will. All the faith that I could muster wouldn't move a small ant hill. Yet I'll tell you, Lord, I'm grateful for the joy of knowing Thee, and for all the mountain moving down through life You've done for me.

When I needed some help you lifted me from the depths of great despair. And when burdens, pain and sorrow have been more than I can bear, you have always been my courage to restore life's troubled sea, and to move these little mountains that have looked so big to me.

Many times when I've had problems and when bills I've had to pay, and the worries and the heartaches just kept mounting every day, Lord, I don't know how you did it. Can't explain the wheres or whys. All I know, I've seen these mountains turn to blessings in disguise.

No, I've never moved a mountain, for my faith is far too small. Yet, I thank you, Lord of Heaven, you have always heard my call. And as long as there are mountains in my life, I'll have no fear, for the mountain-moving Jesus is my strength and always near.

Get Out of the Way!

A man was once visiting a farmer and asked, "Does your mule ever kick you?" "No Sir," was the reply, "he hasn't yet, but he frequently kicks the place where I recently was."

Temptation is like that, and we would do well to learn from this farmers wisdom. The best way to avoid being "kicked" by sin is to not be there. That is what David did when Saul tried to kill him. "And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice" (1 Sam. 18:11).

So it is with us. One of the best ways to avoid harm, trouble, or even sin is to get out of the way!

Accordance Bible Software

I recently purchased a new Bible software package called Accordance after looking at several at several others. Previously, I had used QuickVerse and really enjoyed it. The iLumina program was very interesting, but seems to be lacking in serious Bible study tools. Of course, Logos is the best known and has the largest library. It has the largest price to go with it. Yet, that is the way I was leaning until a friend told me about Accordance.

Accordance is made by Mac users for Mac users (but they also have an emulator for PC's), and since I also use a Mac, I thought it was worth checking out. The new Mac version of Logos will not do everything the PC version will do. That coupled with the price helped me make up my mind, but not completely. What really influenced me to choose Accordance was what it will do. This is an amazing program. Unlike Logos, when you buy a package and later upgrade to a larger package, the price of the first package is credited to the purchase of the next. This makes it much more cost effective.

Don't think you have to sacrifice power for savings. Accordance has extremely innovative search commands like the "Fuzzy" search which allows you to search for a phrase even if you don't have the exact words. The "Instant Details" box shows you verses or original language information as you move your cursor over a word in the workspace window. Time and space will not allow me to tell you all the valuable tools and abilities of this program, but you can see them by going to the Accordance website. You can view demos, watch podcasts of how to use the program, or even download a free demo. It will be worth your while to check these out.

Last weekend, I went to an Accordance training seminar in Kansas City to learn more about this powerful study tool. They did this for free (How many software companies do this?). Beside free tech support, they also have training videos and user forums to you help and to get new ideas. Whether you are a Mac user or a PC, you can benefit from Accordance.

My first real experience with a GPS (Global Positioning System) was on a trip with a friend. It absolutely amazed me to see it work by receiving signals from satellites in space and triangulating our position here on earth. As I watched this device work, I thought of how it is like the Gospel.

The GPS is not like the Gospel in that it is from man, yet the Gospel is from God. It is subject to changes, but the Gospel is not. It can be wrong, but the Gospel is always right. However, there are some ways in which these two are similar.

Both look up for direction. One looks to satellites, and the other to God.
Both tell you where you are (whether you like the answer or not). One tells you where you are on the earth, and the other tells where you are spiritually.
Both tell you how to get where you need to go.
Both can be ignored or rejected. Anyone who has ever used a GPS has heard the familiar word, "Recalculating" when they deviated from the charted route. When one deviates from God's course, he must repent and get back on course or he will end up being lost.

It Takes A Preacher!

Today many believe that preaching is outdated and ineffective. The pulpit is being de-emphasized in many churches, while drama and other forms of entertainment are gaining more prominence. There are two points I want to make about this trend and attitude toward preaching.

First, to minimize preaching in our worship services is to minimize God's plan for our worship. Preaching has been practiced in our worship from the very beginning (Acts 20:7). The pulpit is invaluable to the life and growth of a congregation. It sets the tone, encourages, warns, and informs. When the pulpit is de-emphasized, the members of that congregation will certainly suffer from shallow teaching.

Second, the pulpit is not the real answer to church growth. The pulpit is not going to reach the masses. It is simply too limited. It is limited in scope because it is not primarily designed as an evangelistic tool. The main purpose of the pulpit is directed to the church and not specifically to those outside of Christ. If we used the pulpit only for outreach, we would never be able to deal with the meat of God's Word(Hebrews 5:12-14). It is also limited in range. By its very nature, pulpit preaching is limited to the confines of a building. Most of the lost are outside our buildings without any desire to enter.

There is another unfortunate assumption often made today. Namely, the way to reach the lost is to invite them to worship services. This practice is not wrong; using this practice as an approach to personal evangelism is wrong. As we have seen, worship services are really for Christians, not those outside of Christ. If we are going to reach the lost, we must realize it doesn't take a pulpit, it takes a preacher. When Jesus sent Saul to Damascus to wait to learn what he "must do" (Acts 9:6), He also sent Ananias to give Saul that instruction. In the conversion of Saul, it took a preacher! Why didn't Jesus tell him what to do when He had Saul's attention on the road to Damascus? The only answer I have to that question is that Jesus did not want to do it that way. He must have wanted a preacher to talk to Saul. Consider the Ethiopian Eunuch. The Lord sent Philip to "chase him down." When Philip caught him, he "preached to him Jesus" (Acts 8:36). Again, it took a preacher! It is the same with the Philippian Jailor (Acts 16:31-34).

The fact is, all Christians are called to be "preachers." If we are to grow as we ought to be growing, we must all go out and "preach" or talk to others about Christ, His grace, His word, and His Church. While there may be a very few exceptions (those who are self-taught), the general rule is that everyone who becomes a Christian did so because someone cared enough to talk to him or her. It still takes a preacher. Are you preaching today?

Head or Heart?

I loved the old Star Trek TV show when I was growing up. Do you remember the seeming conflict in the approaches of both Spock and Kirk. Spock approached everything with cold logic. Kirk, on the other hand, approached the things with some degree of emotion and passion, and sometimes he went with his gut feelings. They worked well together.

Today, many people struggle with their circumstances in life questioning whether they should go with their head or their heart. More often than not the world says to go with the heart. Of course, the world always counsels us to do what makes us feel good at the moment. I once heard a speaker say there are some people who have a more doctrinal approach to the Bible and Christian living, while others have a more devotional approach. This sounds a little like the "head or heart" approach to life. Which should we follow?

Following the head strikes me as being "an inch wide and a mile deep." It has the depth or substance, but it is somewhat limited in its breadth. I know following the head is important because Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). "Knowing" and "truth" require the head. When Jesus spoke of the scribes and Pharisees, He said, "All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do" (Mt. 23:3a). Therefore, we must do what we know to be the right thing to do no matter how we feel about it. However, there is an inherent danger in a purely academic approach to the Bible and Christian living. Jesus went on to say about the Pharisees "but do not do after their works, for they say and do not" (Mt. 23:3b). They ignored the weightier matters of the law such as justice, mercy, and faith (Mt. 23:23). They were sticklers for the law, but their heart was not in it.

Following the heart strikes me as being "a mile wide and and inch deep." It is broad enough, but too shallow. This approach recognizes the "felt needs" of every person. It reaches out to others, it cares, and is compassionate. Such was Jesus. I know this is important because Jesus said, "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me" (Mt. 15:8 NKJV). Jesus was just as serious in condemning this as He was condemning the problem in Matthew 23 (Cf. Luke 6:46). However, there is a danger of emotionalism. Sometimes people become concerned only with how Christianity makes them feel to the neglect of doing what is right in the sight of God (Gal. 1:6-9; Rom. 6:1; 2 Tim. 4:3,4; 2 Pet. 1:16).

We must find a balanced blend of the head and the heart. This approach is "a mile wide and a mile deep." This is not an "either, or" question. It is a question of "both, and." The head and the heart are not mutually exclusive. Jesus said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and all thy mind." We see that loving God requires both the head and the heart. This is also true in our worship (John 4:24). All I am saying is that the Christian must follow his head (what God's Word says) with all his heart (emotion and passion)!

Cleaning Day

Today is the day to clean off my desk. It was way too cluttered. This is something we all have to do from time to time. Here are some thoughts that came to me while I was performing this task:

It is always better to have a set time to do certain tasks. This is one of those things that need to be done regularly because things tend to "pile up." We too need to have regular times to "straighten up our own lives." This is the concept of examining ourselves that Paul mentioned in 2 Corinthians 13:5.
It important to put things in their proper place. During the week, we often use a thing and because we are focused on what we are doing at that moment, we don't put it back in its place. How often do we do this in our personal lives? We tend to get caught up in the daily struggles, influences, and exertion. In the process, our priorities get shuffled around. This is when we need to take the time to put our priorities back in their proper place.
It is surprising how much needless stuff accumulates. Initially, some of these things seem to have some significance and importance at the moment, but after the week is over, we realize this stuff is not important and simply clutters our desk. There are things in life that seem to be important at first, but eventually we realize they are only cluttering up our lives. This is when it is time to throw these things out! It is more difficult for some than others. I'm one of those who have a tendency to hold on to things I just don't need. Of course, occasionally when I throw things away (bulletins, notes I've jotted down, etc.), it seems I need them a day or two later. While this has happened, it is rare. I can't even remember a specific instance right now. So, in reality, I got by fine without it. Is there something in your life that needs to be discarded right now. Obviously, sin must be discarded (2 Cor. 7:9-10). However, there are times that even benign things in life need to be discarded when they tend to clutter up our lives.

I never cease to be amazed at the life lessons we can find all around us every day. Even the most mundane tasks afford us great opportunities to grow spiritually if we will look for the lessons that are there. I want to challenge you to look for the lessons in the tasks you have to do today!

I'm Back!

I apologize for the "vacation" I have taken from blogging. One thing I'm going to do this time is limit the number of posts. Someone once said, "'The Thought for the Day' doesn't mean we should only have one thought per day." Well, it seems that there are days I can scarcely muster one thought for a blog, let alone several a week! Actually, time is the main reason I have not been posting. It seems that I either go all out with something or I don't do it at all. I am trying to change this and do better. Therefore, I will try to do only one or two posts per week from now on.

It is amazing that so many people have continued to check this blog during "my absence." Thank you for coming back. I hope future post will be a real blessing to each of you.

Bootheel Youth Camp

I have been trying to post some pictures of last week's session of camp, but for some reason I keep getting an error message. Maybe I will get it to work soon.

At any rate, we had a wonderful week. There were 74 campers plus counselors and other staff. Of course, we had some rain during the week, but it didn't stop us. All in all, we had a terrific group of campers. Five young men were baptized into Christ and two young ladies were baptized when they got home. Several other young people will spend more time studying with their parents at home.

On the Evolution/Creationism Front

The state of Louisiana has passed a bill allowing teachers to offer evidence that may be critical of politically correct scientific issues.Click here to read more about this new development in Louisiana.

This will include such subjects as Darwinism and Global Warming among others. In the past, public school teachers have been censored and reprimanded for simply stating the fact that the theory of evolution is flawed. Now they have the freedom to give all the facts at least in Louisiana. I hope this proves to be a trend.

However, it does not mean that Biblical truth concerning creationism will be allowed in public schools. Also, it is doubtful that most of the more liberal states will do anything like this. At least it is a small step in the right direction.

"A Christian Nation"

Are we a Christian nation? Barak Obama says "Whatever we were, we are no longer a Christian nation, at least, not just." I don't intend to get into politics here, but I do want everyone to hear what Barak Obama said about this nation. Just click on the You Tube picture below. He is not the only one saying this type of thing today. Obviously, there is a concerted effort on the part of some to discredit Christianity and hopefully relegate it to obscurity in this country.

Contrary to what these folks are saying, this country was founded upon the principles and values of the Bible. The founding fathers were very clear about this. One of the great disappointments of our education system today is the refusal to expose young people to the Federalist Papers which reveal the underlying philosophy of these founders.

The most troubling words in the Obama quote are "no longer." This implies we are not what we once were with regard to Christianity. Friends, we need to get back to these principles. Of course, there are things that have changed for the better (i.e., Civil Rights). Keep in mind that the things that were not good about this country in the past were not supported or condoned by the Bible.

This is not to say that other religions have no place in the U.S.A. One of the founding principles of this great nation is the freedom of religion. I believe this. We all have the power of choice. It is interesting that in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2,3), Adam and Eve had a choice. God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the garden. Yes, other religious beliefs are welcome here, but they must not be allowed to change these founding principles. Whatever religion one may be, we must all be Americans! We must all remember that they are here because of the very principle of the freedom of religion that some would like to destroy. What do you think? Would there be freedom of religion here if this country were founded on Islamic principles and values?

"Logophobia"

Lionel Ruby defines the word "Logophobia" as being the fear of logic (Logic, An Introduction, viii). "This is a characteristic of those who speak disparagingly about the cruciality of valid reasoning and who are not at all disturbed that their position implies contradiction." In our postmodern age, many people reject logic for relativism and feelings. These become the foundation for the way they see the world around them and religion in particular. This attitude even creeps into the church from time to time. When anyone who rejects evidence or facts in order to hold a preconceived idea, belief, or some desired practice regardless of what the Bible says is suffering from "logophobia".

Lord Halifax once said, "Nothing has an uglier look to us than reason when it is not on our side." Again, David Hume pronounced "No man turns against reason until reason turns against him." There is much truth to these two statements. However, man's rebellion against reason does not change the universal truth of God's Word. This attitude still comes down to simple rebellion against God.

God said, "Come now, and let us reason together" (Isaiah 1:18). His desire for us is to reject postmodernism and hold to His Will. He also commands us to do this. "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). We have the inspired example of how the Bereans were commended for searching the scriptures (Acts 17:11). We are told to contend for the faith, and be ready to give an answer (Jude 3; 1 Peter 3:15). May we never be ashamed of God's Word, and may we always have the courage to face the truth - even when it is not appealing to our finite human sensibilities.

Questions For Bible Study

I once ran across an old bulletin article written by the late Franklin Camp in 1968. It was about personal Bible study using ten questions. These questions are based on private study of a chapter of the Bible. They are designed to promote introspection on your part and to help you handle the things you may face each day. I want to share these questions with you today.

1. What is the principle subject of the chapter?
2. What is the most important lesson? (for you)
3. What is the most impressive verse to me? (memorize it)
4. Who are the main persons in the chapter?
5. Is there anything in the chapter about Christ?
6. Is there any example for me to follow?
7. Is there any error to avoid?
8. Is there any duty to perform?
9. Is there any promise to claim?
10. Is there any prayer with petitions (prayers) that apply to my special needs?

Brother Camp was a brilliant man! Remember, these are designed to help you in your own personal, private Bible study. The more you apply it to your own circumstances and needs, the more it will benefit you. Enjoy!

Mission Trip to Lincoln, MO

Some of the young people (and young at heart) from Doniphan went to Lincoln, MO for our first Mission Trip June 5-8. I will begin a Gospel Meeting with the church in Lincoln tomorrow, and it will continue through Wednesday evening. Charles Rose is the preacher here in Lincoln. He worked hard to have things ready for our arrival and has been a real help in this effort. We appreciate the good work he and the brethren are doing here. Christy Harms (a Doniphan girl!) lives here and has also been a great help to us as well.

Our group has worked diligently door knocking and trying to set up Bible Correspondence Courses in Lincoln and some of the surrounding area. We only had two days, but they covered all of Lincoln in one. Here are some pictures of everyone at work.

Last week when I was in Walmart, an elderly gentleman was driving one of those electric scooters in front of me. When he suddenly made a tight U-turn toward me, I jumped to the side. He had a good laugh at my expense and then we began to talk. He was over 90 years old and said he flew a P-38 in WWII. He was shot down over Borneo and spent over 3 months in a Japanese prison camp before he escaped. My wife was waiting for me and I had to go even though I could have stayed there all day listening to the stories he told. I can't help but think of him on the eve of Memorial Day. People like him helped insure the freedom we enjoy today. I am very grateful to them.

This has made me think of the importance of remembering. It has always played a role in man's relationship to God. God put the rainbow in the sky to remember His promise that He would never destroy the earth again by water (Genesis 9:16). Throughout the Torah (law), God instructed every aspect of building the Tabernacle, the utensils, and the garments for the priests. Several times God says these things were to be made a certain way as a memorial. Even the fourth commandment included the word "Remember" (Exodus 20:8).

Remembering helps us in so many ways.
1. It protects us. That is why Jesus said "Remember Lot's wife" (Luke 17:32). It was a warning.
2. It instructs us. The "things that were written afore time were written our learning (Romans 15:4).
3. It enriches us. Paul called Timothy to remember the faith that was in his mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:4).
4. It encourages us. One example of this is found in Psalm 112:6, "Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance."
5. It connects us. This is why all Christians come together on the first day of every week. We are there for a memorial (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24,25).

On this Memorial Day, we will remember those who gave themselves for our national freedom. Yet, as important as that is, it pales in comparison to the ultimate sacrifice of love that Jesus made for us on that cruel cross. May we always be faithful to Him by remembering Him and what He did for us.

More On The Global Warming Front

Many scientists are taking a stand against the faulty conclusions of the Global Warming Movement. A petition has been signed by over 30,000 scientists who deny the doom and gloom predictions of the Al Gore crowd. Click here to read more about this. I doubt if you will hear about this in the mainstream media.

As Christians, we must realize that we are stewards of the environment God has provided for us. However, that does not mean we should be gullible. The fact is we must understand that there are people out there with ulterior motives who want to gain more power and control over the masses. May we do all we can to protect the environment. Furthermore, may we intelligently consider all the facts and sides of the issue.

Revealing Questions

One day when my father had "bus duty" at the school where he then served as assistant principal, someone threw some fireworks out a bus window. Dad got on the bus and asked, "Who threw that fire cracker?" To which, one little boy quickly replied, "That wasn't a fire cracker. It was a cherry bomb." Dad then said, "You come with me." The young man who spoke up revealed more than he ever intended.

I think we all do this more than we realize. We will say one thing, but a perceptive listener will glean much more from what we said than we intend. Sometimes people do jump to conclusions, but here I am talking about the fine art of reading between the lines. This can be seen in some of the questions we read in the Bible. For instance...

1. Genesis 4:9 "Am I my brother's keeper?" All God asked Cain was where Able was. This reply by Cain showed a certain amount of defensiveness. Of course, people often become defensive when they are guilty of something. That did turn out to be the case with Cain.

2. John 21:21 "What about this man?" Jesus had just finished confirming Peter's faith by asking him three times if he loved Him. Jesus then signified "by what death he would glorify God" and ended by saying "Follow me" (John 21:19). Peter's response at this point was not a good one. He saw John standing there and asked "But Lord, what about this man?" Jesus answered, "... what is that to you..." (21:23). Here Peter wanted off the "hot seat." He may have even revealed a bit of jealousy and selfishness. The main thing is he was minding other people's business when he should have been dealing with his own problems.

3. Matthew 19:18 "Which ones?" When the rich young ruler asked Jesus what he needed to do to have eternal life, Jesus told him to "keep the commandments" (19:17). To which the young man asked "Which ones?" This question is puzzling to me. Did he hope to get by with only obeying a few? I do believe he was sincere in what he asked. Maybe he was making a distinction between the Bible and the man-made laws of the Jews. I hope so. After Jesus specified what commandments, he acknowledged that he had kept these and inquired, "What lack I yet?" (19:20). Of course, Jesus told him to sell all he had and give it to the poor and follow Him. The young man then went away sorrowful. Apparently, he had a problem with the command about covetousness. He wasn't willing to give up his great possessions to follow Jesus. It all seems to go back to his question, "Which ones?"

I am not suggesting that we go around trying to read something in to every little thing others say. The point is this. We would do well to ponder the words that come out of our own mouths. Maybe we can learn a little more about what is really in our own hearts.

Freed-Hardeman 139th Commencement

Susan Galloway, our daughter, graduated today from FHU. For the first time in six years, we do not have a child attending Freed! Susan and David, her husband, will both attend Memphis State this fall to begin the Master of Fine Arts program in Theater. David will specialize in Set Design, and Susan will focus on Directing. Their dream is to one day own and operate their own theater. From the looks of things, they are going to be well prepared to make that dream a reality.

Another highlight of the day was the commencement speaker. They out did themselves this year by getting the Honorable Janice Rogers Brown. She was on the short list of the latest Supreme Court nomination possibilities, and is now on the U.S. court of Appeals in Washington D.C. since being nominated by President Bush, and finally being confirmed two or three years ago. Her address was outstanding! I was very impressed. We are fortunate not only to have a Christian sitting on the bench in Washington, but to have this Christian in that high position.

"Mom's Overture"

Mother's Day is Sunday! You have to appreciate godly mothers. Proverbs 31:10-31 tells us about one we often call "the virtuous woman," but much of what she does has to do with being a mother as much as being a wife. Christian mothers are one of the great hopes for the future of the Church on earth. There is no way we can be grateful enough for all they do. Jim Faughn sent me this You Tube clip by Anita Renfroe which shows her performing what she calls the "Mom's Overture." I really enjoyed it, and I hope you do as well.

Becoming A Vessel Of Honor

I. Material In The Church.
Paul begins by saying, "In a great house" (20). This is a reference to the Church (1 Timothy 3:15). He makes the point that there are different qualities of vessels in the Church. Some of these vessels are of honor and some of dishonor. Those Christians who are typical of the vessels of dishonor do serious harm to the Church. Yet, those who are considered vessels of honor are a credit (Matthew 5:16). Are we stuck in one category or another? No, you can change, but it is a...

II. Matter of Choice.
Notice Paul's choice of words in verse 21. "If anyone cleanses himself from the latter." This indicates that each individual must accept personal responsibility. The word "If" may be a small word, but it has a huge meaning. "If" shows that something is conditional. In this case, it means we have a choice to be either a vessel of honor or of dishonor. Again, notice that Paul speaks of how one "cleanses himself." Obviously, we do play a role in our own salvation. It is not enough to say God saves us. He does, but that does not mean we don't have any responsibility to God as well. When one says "I'm saved by grace, and I don't have to do anything," it is lazy grace. This "lazy grace" is not going to save anyone. Then Paul said, "He will be a vessel of honor." This is a very special kind of vessel. This can be you! The vessel of honor is "Sanctified" (2 Timothy 1:9). It is "Useful for the Master" (2 Timothy 4:11). It is "Prepared for every good work" (Titus 1:16). So then, how can one choose to be a vessel of honor?

III. Moving Toward Christ.
First, one can move toward Christ by being diligent in the study of God's Word (2 Timothy 2:15). Second, becoming a vessel of honor includes shunning profane and idle babblings (16). Third, departing from sin is imperative (19). Fourth, one can be what God wants him to be by fleeing youthful lusts (22). Fifth, one must avoid foolishness (23,24). Finally, we should keep a proper attitude as we do all we can do to correct those who are in sin (25,26). May we all be vessels of honor!

The fact that Hollywood continues to put out so many movies that are not fit to be watched is proof that they have an evil agenda. They would rather corrupt our children and our nation than make money. Their worldly, godless world view is more important to them than profit. This should be a warning to all Christians. The "secular progressives" are willing to fight for their beliefs. What about us? Are we ready to take a stand for God, Jesus, His Church, His Word, and biblical values?

Looking For Loopholes

There are some people who always seem to be looking for a way around God's Word. They will diligently search the scriptures, but only to find out how they can circumvent or avoid the clear teachings of the Bible. They are looking for loopholes. Here are just a few perceived loopholes they may try to use.

1. No one is perfect (Romans 3:23). On the other hand, we are told to go on unto perfection (Hebrews 6:1). When Jesus told the woman caught in adultery "Neither do I condemn you," He also said, "...go and sin no more" (John 8:11).

2. Others are in sin... What about them? They are like Peter when he wanted to get off the "hot seat" by asking Jesus "But Lord, what about this man?" (John 21:21). Yet, Paul warned us not to compare ourselves with others (1 Corinthians 10:12). Actually, this is only an attempt to dodge our own responsibility to deal with sin in our lives by diverting attention to the sin of others. It just does not work.

3. I'm never separated from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). That's right. Furthermore, God even "commended His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). While God loves His children, he also disciplines them. As the Hebrew writer put it, "For whom the Lord loves He chastens" (Hebrews 12:6). Jesus said, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent" (Revelation 3:19). He still expects us to repent. Even though God loves the lost, they are still just that-- lost!

4. The blood of Christ keeps on cleansing (1 John 1:7). Yes, the word "cleanses" does include a continuous action in the Greek. While the blood of Christ does keep on cleansing us, it is based on the condition that we walk in the light!

5. You can't judge me (Matthew 7:1). This seems to be the "granddaddy" of all so-called loopholes. However, this does not refer to all kinds of judging. Jesus told us to "judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24). Of course, Psalm 119:172 informs us that "all God's commandments are righteousness." So we can judge based on what the Bible teaches. Paul condemned the Corinthians for not judging when they should have dealt with the sin among them (1 Corinthians 5:1-3). The bottom line is this--we will all be judged by the Word of the Lord (John 12:48).

There is no such thing as a get out of jail free card while we refuse to repent of sin. Looking for loopholes will never benefit us spiritually, nor will it ever help a person go to heaven.

The Dangers of Oprah!

There are a couple of YouTube videos you need to see. Someone sent this to me by e-mail, and I don't always take the time to immediately read things that are forwarded to me. However, I do usually get around to them. That said, I just checked out a a forward that contained a video clip about Oprah's Church and one about her denying Christ. I knew she was getting into the New Age movement, but I did not know she was into it this deeply. You may have seen these already, but if not here they are.

I don't think there is anything said in these clips that you cannot answer for yourself. So, I'm not going to take the time to give "Book, Chapter, and Verse" when you know them as well as I do. Yet, it is good to hear what Oprah is teaching. Due to her huge audience, she is more dangerous than most people think!

New Class Book!

I have just published a new book entitled Fullness of Time: A Brief Historical Background of the New Testament. It is a 13 lesson class book for teens or adults. This book is designed to help Christians have a better understanding of where the Pharisees and Sadducees came from. It has a discussion of the Herodian family, the Emperors, etc., showing how they fit in with the New Testament. There is also a discussion of how we got the Bible and its reliability. The Inter-Testament Period is covered as well.

"American Idol" Edits Out Jesus

I admit it... I enjoy American Idol when I can see it. It is actually a very good and glorified talent show. Although I missed the "Idol Gives Back" special Wednesday evening, I have heard what happened during their finale when they sung "Shout To The Lord." The lyrics "My Jesus, my Savior..." were changed to "My Shepherd, my Savior..." These lyrics are the first words of the song. Actually, it was a little surprising they would even perform this spiritual song. Click here to see an article about the performance. It is a wonderful song of faith in Jesus, but the name Jesus was edited out of the song for this performance.

Some think that even the watered down version of the song was a step in a good direction, but I think it is a step in a very dangerous direction. Why? This leads to a politically correct form of religion. It seeks unity based on consensus rather than what God demands of those who would be His disciples. When Peter addressed the Sanhedrin, the high council of the Jews, he spoke of "Jesus of Nazareth" and then said, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Later, the Sanhedrin commanded them (Peter and John) "not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus" (Acts 4:18). The Apostles answer was classic, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard" (Acts 4:19-20).

The refusal to use Jesus' name in a way such as this reveals that one is either ashamed (Romans 1:16) or does not truly believe in Jesus (John 8:24). Jesus Himself said, "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32-33).

Life Is Too Short

I'm back! I bet you wondered where I was. Well, I have been busy trying to get the new year in swing here in Doniphan. Yet, it is good to get back to the blog. I hope some of you have not totally given up on me yet. Today I have some random thoughts about life.

Life is too short...

... to put up with nonsense.
... to be controlled by anger, a bad attitude, or pettiness.
... for holding a grudge.
... to neglect your family.
... to put off doing what needs to be done.
... to mope all the time.
... to not talk to someone about their soul's condition and your Savior.
... to waste time in sin.
... and, of course, to neglect God.

Life goes by so quickly. As most of you know, last year both of our daughters were married. Now we have two fantastic sons-in-law. It is difficult to see how fast time is moving when we are rearing our children, and most people are amazed at how quickly those years are over. We all have so much to look forward to in this life and in the life to come that it would be a shame to needlessly squander it. One of life's great skills is the ability to spend it on the truly important things. Life is too short to not live it abundantly (John 10:10).

I hope you have a wonderful 2008!

Why Did He Drown?

Anyone who has taken the Fisher's of Men Person to Person Evangelism Course knows the answer to the question before we tell the story.

A man is in the water and he is drowning. He yells for help. A nearby boater gets to him and says, "Get in!" He pushes the boat away and says, "Leave me alone." Another boater gets to the scene and throws a life vest to the man. He throws it back saying, "I don't want that. Can't you see I'm drowning?" In the meantime, a man on the bank had a rope from his campsite, and he throws it to the man saying, "Grab the rope and I'll pull you to shore!" The man pushed the rope away also. The two boaters witnessed the whole ordeal with shock and disbelief. Before they could get to the man to rescue him, the man had gone under for the last time and he drowned. Now comes the question. Why did he drown?

It was not because he rejected every attempt to rescue him. It was not even because he may have wanted to drown. The only reason this man drowned is because he was in the water.

What does this mean to us?

A man was dying in sin. He asked for help from many of his acquaintances. There were some who befriended him and invited him to church. Some from the Church tried to talk to him about his soul. Others showed him a real Christian example and encouraged him to do what was right. They taught him about God's love and Jesus' sacrifice. They made sure he understood what grace was all about and the necessity of accessing that grace (Romans 5:2) by obedience to the Gospel of Christ. But, that man simply rejected the Gospel. He was a good man, but he just would not make that commitment to the Lord. Eventually he died, and he was lost for eternity. Now we can ask a similar question. Why was he lost? The answer is not because he rejected the Gospel. It was because he was in sin.

Today we must realize that the world's greatest problem isn't global warming or a nuclear Iran. The world's greatest problem is sin. It always has been and always will be. Sin will destroy many people for all eternity. Jesus said, "If you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your sins" (John 8:24). There are people all around us who are "in sin." We must renew our sense of urgency in carrying the Gospel to a lost and dying world!

Perseverance!

It is only appropriate that the last installment in our series on leadership be about perseverance. God's leader must stand and continue to stand. Consider Nehemiah, David, Daniel, Jeremiah, Peter, Paul and many others. They all had one thing in common--- Perseverance.

Of course, the tough thing about perseverance is that it takes courage and conviction. What's more is that it can be fortified with prayer. As a matter of fact, it must also be fortified with faith.

Just remember Ephesians 6:13. "Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."

Interested in the Future.

We need more dreamers among our elders today. Yet, many people don't like that. Remember what Joseph's brothers said about him? "Behold that dreamer cometh" (Genesis 37:19). Bottom line -- leaders must have vision because without it we go nowhere.

Do you remember the story about the little boy who wrote an essay for his teacher? The essay was to be about what the boy wanted to be in 20 years. The little boy wrote that he wanted among other things a 2000 acre ranch and a 4000 square foot house. When he got the paper back from the teacher, he had been given an "F". The teacher said the little boy's essay was unattainable because he was so poor and he came from a low income family. However, the teacher did tell the young man that he could take the paper home and rewrite it and she would change the grade. When the boy took the paper back to the teacher, it had not been edited at all. He looked the teacher in the eye and said, "You keep the "F" and I'll keep my dreams." As the story goes, the little boy surpassed his dreams and the aging teacher took her class to his huge ranch every year for a field trip so they could see how important their dreams were.

Leaders need to set goals for the future. We also need to set objectives to reach those goals. When someone climbs stairs, they do it one step at a time. No one goes from the bottom of the stairs to the top in one step. Furthermore, God's leaders need to always look to the future. They need to be forward looking. Technology is also an important aspect of this vision. We need to take full advantage of the blessings that are available to us today and tomorrow.

Be result oriented! Sometimes it is not a question of what works, but what works best. The leader must identify what needs to be accomplished. Then he must forget what doesn't work or is just mediocre, and keep what works best to glorify God and save the souls of the lost.

Handle God's Word

Obviously, we cannot go into much detail on this point. However, just as Hosea wrote "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6), we need to take the need for the knowledge of God's Word seriously today.

Many passages teach this importance. There is the need to "search the scriptures" (Acts 17:11). There is the need to "rightly divide the Word" (2 Timothy 2:15). There is the need to "grow in knowledge" (2 Peter 3:18). There is the need to be "filled with knowledge" (Col. 1:9-10).

What happens when God's leaders lack knowledge? The answer is often seen in two extremes. First, some become liberal in their dealings with the Word. In other words, they go beyond the Will of God. Second, some become traditionalist. What I mean by this is that they do things based solely on the way they have seen things done in the past. An example of this can be seen in the old practice of covering the emblems of the Lord's Supper with some kind of cloth before it is served. Of course, this was done to keep flies off the emblems in the days before air conditioners. Yet, some people attached spiritual significance to the old covering. They did this not based on scripture, but based on their tradition.

Paul summed this up best when he wrote to Timothy saying, "Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee" (1 Timothy 4:16).

Self-control.

Solomon once said, "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city" (Proverbs 16:32). Napoleon said there are two forces in the world - the sword and the spirit. He also said the spirit can always defeat the sword.

Although this is a qualification for an elder (2 Timothy 3:2), it also applies to all Christians. As a matter of fact, all but about four of the qualifications of elders apply to every Christian. This is the "temperance"(KJV) or self-control which is one of what we call the Christian graces (2 Peter 1:6). Of course, this is something that must be learned by most of us. The brothers James and John were called "Sons of Thunder", but now John is known as "the Apostle of Love." We must all work on this in our own lives.

A leader must be in control of body and mind. This does not mean he is not passionate, but he is always in control. There is an old quote that I have seen in church bulletins for years. It goes like this... "A man is like steel. It he loses his temper he is useless." There is simply no room for a short fuse in the Christian's life.

How can one lead others if he is not in control of himself?

Respect.

Even when there is a disagreement over a matter of judgment, a leader must be able to disagree without being "disagreeable." We find an example of this with Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15:39. They had a sharp contention over whether or not they should take Mark on the next trip. They decided to go on separate trips. However, we later find Paul asking for Mark by name and saying he was profitable to him for the ministry (2 Timothy 4:11).

Respect must exist for there to be genuine concern for others. The leader must be friendly and practice hospitality. These will go a long way to helping one to be respectful to others.

Encourage!

The ability to encourage others is a fundamental part of leadership. This encouragement takes different forms according to the need that must be met. Notice, for example, 1 Thessalonians 5:14. "Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men" (KJV). Here we find that the unruly need to be warned, the feebleminded need to be comforted, the weak need to be supported, and leaders must be patient toward all men.

A boss can force someone to work with threats. However, a leader can make a person work because they want to . They come to appreciate and enjoy the work. I once read a story about how General Eisenhower would tell his officers to push a string which was on the table before them. Of course, the string would just pile up in front of them. Yet, when he told them to pull the string, it straightened out and followed along behind their hands. At this moment, Eisenhower would make his point about leading others. The ability to encourage others is a powerful part of the art of leadership.

Doniphan Give Away Day

Saturday, November 3rd, we had a clothing Give Away Day in Doniphan. Everyone who came was able to pick through all the clothes that had been donated for the event, and take them for free. In addition, we gave them a color brochure about the church and they could pick through several tracts written by Allen Webster for House to House/Heart to Heart. Someone told us that this "give away" was helping them get Christmas presents for their children. I want to thank everyone who helped make this day so successful.

Delegate Without Ignoring Responsibilities.

Do you remember when Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, saw how Moses was trying to judge every matter for all the people of Israel (Exodus 18:13-22)? Jethro said, "So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, 'The thing that you do is not good...'" It was because one man could not do what Moses was trying to do. It was not fair to Moses or the people. Jethro gave Moses some advice. It can be summed up in one word -- DELEGATE! When the work load is spread around, so much more can be accomplished. Furthermore, that same work can be done more efficiently and effectively.

On the other hand, a leader must not ignore or neglect his responsibility. It is not good for the church or the people involved when elders expect preachers to shepherd the flock. It is not right for elders to not allow and/or expect deacons to do their jobs. Deacons can also be allowed to make some decisions within stated parameters.

Jethro's advice to Moses in Exodus 18 shows us that the art of delegating involves using a certain kind of people (21). It also demands organization and job descriptions (21). Finally, delegating means we must let them do their job (22).

Anthony Flew Converts to Theism

Back in the 1970's, Dr. Anthony Flew debated brother Thomas B. Warren on the existence of God. Flew has now come out stating that he believes in God. Click here to read more about it . He has also written a book on the subject entitled "There Is a God: How the World's Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind." The book can be found online. At this point Flew considers himself a Deist, but he continues to study.

Leaders Must Be Authoritative Without Being Authoritarian.

Plato thought philosophers should rule the world. In his book "The Prince," Machiavelli said about the same thing. Even Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States, had similar views concerning government.

An authoritarian believes decisions are to be made by one man or group of men presumed to know better than others what ought to be done. Yet, we must remember that no man rules the Church. We are under a monarchy. Christ is our King, and no one has the right to make his own rules or to change what the Lord has already decided.

Elders have delegated authority to rule and make decisions in matters of judgement. In other words, their job is to expedite God's law. God has already made the decisions in matters of faith. Therefore, elders do have authority, but they must always guard against becoming authoritarian.

Enthusiasm!

Enthusiasm is necessary in any worldly endeavor whether it be sports, sales, etc. God's workers must show enthusiasm or they will not attract others to Christ. Romans 12:11 tells us to "be fervent in spirit." Fervent means boiling, aglow. Ira North once said, "Enthusiasm is as powerful as dynamite and contagious as measles." Gus Nichols stated the following...

"Good preaching, soul-stirring singing, earnest prayers, all the members faithfully attending the services and abounding in good works, contribute to the making of elders and deacons (1 cor. 15:58). Some congregations are mere cemeteries in which to bury valuable talents (Matt. 25:14-30). In some places about 10% of the members are doing about 90% of the Lord's work. All Christians must work or die. It will not be easy to develop elders and deacons in a church which is filled with lukewarmness and indifference (Rev. 3:13-19). Churches need to get excited about religion, and stir one another up to good works (Heb. 10:24). The church cannot produce great men upon a diet of cold, intellectual sermons, formal prayers and songs. Such churches need to wake up and live (Eph. 5:14). The only thing many churches have learned to do effectively is to 'Quench the Spirit' (1 Thess. 5:19). Nothing will grow well in an ice house! Elders and deacons, gospel preachers, song leaders, and Bible class teachers, are best produced in the hot house of a church 'fervent in spirit.'" (from North's book "At Work for the Master" p. 65).

May we provide an atmosphere of enthusiasm in the Lord's Church so that young leaders may grow.

How Do You Spell Leadership?

This is the beginning of a series of short articles on leadership. I will use this word as an acronym. Today's blog deals with the letter "L".

What is "Leadership"? Someone once defined it as the ability to direct others to the efficient completion of a prescribed goal with a minimum of friction. Notice the three key components of this definition.
1) Direct others
2) Efficient completion
3) Minimum of friction
When all of these elements are present in the completion of a task, it is because good leadership is involved.

The Church faces a scarcity of leaders today. There are several reasons for this. Many are unaware of what they ought to do as leaders. Some are afraid to step up like Moses or the one talent man. There are those who have no foresight. The lack of training has contributed to this lack of leadership. Some are not willing to pay the price.

Obviously, something must be done to remedy this situation. First, we must realize that there is a great danger in times like this. Jotham's allegory (Judges 9) shows us that if good leaders don't step up and accept the responsibility, bad men will. Second, we must realize that nothing is going to change unless we make it change for the better. The late president Ronald Reagan once said, "I don't believe in a fate no matter what we do. But, I do believe in a fate if we do nothing."

Prepared To Preach

Last minute instructions and words of encouragement mean a great deal to us.Paul did this with Timothy. He wanted to impress him with certain truths. Among these was the importance of being prepared to preach. In 2 Timothy 2: 8, Paul told Timothy to "remember." This seems to be Paul's final exhortation in a nutshell.

"Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory" (2 Timothy 2:8-10).

Paul was saying "Remember the Power of Preaching" (verse 8). The resurrection gives the gospel its power (Rom. 1:4). Just think what Christianity would be without the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:13,14,19). Paul shows us the secret to the power of preaching because what is preached has the power to save (Rom. 1:16). When you see the living Christ, you will preach the soul-saving message. You can then preach with conviction, and you will keep on preaching.

Paul was also saying "Remember the Perseverance of Preaching" (9). As powerful as the gospel is, it takes perseverance to preach it. Paul suffered in order to preach. In this verse, we see the perseverance of the man. The irony is that he preached the good news yet, suffered as an evil doer. It isn't always easy to talk to others about their spiritual condition (Ezk. 3:9). We can also see the perseverance of the message. Paul said he was in chains, yet, the Word of God was not and is not chained. Sadly, Christians can chain the Word if we change the message, or compromise it, or are ignorant of it, or hide it.

Finally, Paul was saying "Remember the Purpose of Preaching (10). Why did Paul endure all things? It was "for the elect's sake." Why? It was so that they may obtain salvation. Isn't that what it is all about? This was our Lord's purpose. He came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10; 1 Timothy 1:15). There is no greater purpose we can have in life!

This is a responsibility every Christian has. I'm sure Timothy always remembered the Power, the Perseverance, and the Purpose of preaching. We ought to be impressed with these facts as well. In his book "How To Build A Great Church", Mac Layton told the story of the great black scientist, George Washington Carver, who sought funding for some of his projects. He approached Andrew Carnegie for a financial gift. Carnegie listened to Carver's proposal and gave him $500 for his work. Carver thanked the philanthropist and immediately asked for another meeting. Carnegie asked why. Carver said, "Sir, I have not impressed you with the greatness of my cause." He gave the scientist another meeting and that time gave him a check for $500,000! We must be impressed with the greatness of God's message and do all we can to impress others also.

Reich's Conflict

Robert B. Reich, the former Secretary of Labor under president Bill Clinton and now a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, wrote an article about "Bush's God." Click here to see the article. Although this article was written in 2004, it serves to remind us that we are facing some great forces of secularism today. Especially notice Mr. Reich's last paragraph.

"The great conflict of the 21st century may be between the West and terrorism. But terrorism is a tactic, not a belief. The underlying battle will be between modern civilization and anti-modernist fanatics; between those who believe in the primacy of the individual and those who believe that human beings owe blind allegiance to a higher authority; between those who give priority to life in this world and those who believe that human life is no more than preparation for an existence beyond life; between those who believe that truth is revealed solely through scripture and religious dogma, and those who rely primarily on science, reason, and logic. Terrorism will disrupt and destroy lives. But terrorism is not the only danger we face."

Notice, he says terrorism is a "tactic, not a belief." However, he ignores the radical beliefs that fuel terrorism. Reich paints with a broad brush which obviously includes Christians along with radical Muslims. Christians are not terrorists, but the secular leftists in our country today see this a an opportunity attack Christianity along with Islam. Statements such as these ought to make every Christian open his eyes to what we are facing today. Christians are in a spiritual war. We are at war against the forces of secularism, and he is on the wrong side.

Tough Decisions

Decisions are a part of everyday life, and those who make the best decisions in life will have a richer and possibly more successful life. However, making decisions is not always that easy. David found that out as one can see in 2 Samuel 11. Here you can see what a poor decision can do for you.

In 2 Samuel, we read how David looked (vs 2) when Bathsheba was bathing. He then inquired after the woman (3). Then he sent messengers to her (4). He should have stopped looking in the very beginning, but he didn't. How often does this happen today resulting in adultery, pornography, cyberporn, and even what some call cyberadultery? After David learned that Bathsheba was with child, he tried to cover up his sin by deceit and trickery (8, 12). David finally went so far that he stooped to murder (15).

Why did David make such bad decisions during this time of his life? He made his first bad decision in the passion and pressure of the moment. Just as Samson did with Deliah and Peter did when he denied Jesus, David made a snap decision without giving himself time to think it through. David also failed to consider the consequences. Of course, these consequences were severe (10-14). His decision was also hypocritical and could be considered rebellious. Why? Look at verse 4. The Bible says he lay with her for she was "purified from her uncleanness." In other words, he was careful to not break one minor Old Testament law while breaking a major one. The decision to murder was made due to David's own self-imposed restrictions which caused a state of desperation. David had a deadline to beat. He tried to get Uriah to sleep with Bathsheba to cover up his sin, but when Uriah would not do so David felt like he had to act quickly to keep the damage controlled. How often do we set up deadlines or get it in our heads that has to work out a certain way, and we end up making bad decisions based on a narrow perspective? Finally, missing from this passage is counsel. Why did he not seek out godly counsel in this matter? It was probably because he was trying to save face. At that time, covering up his sin was more important to David than Uriah's life. It was more important than repentance and more important than doing what was right.

What does that mean for us today?
1. We learn that we must SAFEGUARD ourselves against pressure. The best way to do this is to make up you mind what you will do before you find yourself in a tempting situation. Don't make poor decisions in the "passion of the moment."
2. STUDY (especially the consequences). We must train ourselves to think of the consequences of our actions. As the Lord said through the prophet Haggai, "Consider you ways" (Hag. 1:5,7).
3. SUBMIT to God. We must do this rather than rebel or act hypocritically (James 4). One of the best things one can do during a time of temptation is to pray.
4. SUBSTITUTE faith for self-imposed restrictions (Hebrews 11:6). It may be hard to turn things over to God, but it is always the best thing to do. Actually, the sooner we do this the better things turn out.
5. SEEK SUBSTANTIVE advice. There are times we all need advice. The key is to get good advice.

It is true that some decisions are not as important as others, but the important decisions can make or break one's life.

The Devil's Devices

Most people have seen pictures of the great wall of China. This wall was built to keep enemies out, but it did not work. Why? The enemy did not assault the wall, or try to destroy it. They simply bribed a gate keeper and then walked in. All of us have gates to our lives that keep Satan out. Paul wrote to the Corinthians saying, "for we are not ignorant of his [Satan's] devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11). Satan has many devices which he uses to try to get into our lives.

Doubt - (James 1:6:-8) Satan delights in keeping us off balance.

Disengaged - (Lamentations 1:12) Someone once said "Hardening of the heart ages people more quickly than hardening of arteries." Satan doesn't was us to really care about other people, the Church, what the Bible really says, or our own soul's destination. As long as we don't care, he has us where he wants us.

Discouragement - (Jeremiah 20:18) What can we do when discouragement comes? When down, look up! Pray. I realize that it is easier said than done, but we must trust God during the dark times of life. Allow others to help (2 Cor. 1:4). Remember, God can do great things when we are down. In other words, keep doing what you know you can do.

Dissatisfaction - Satan doesn't want us to be content with Christ or with anything to do with Christ. That would include dissatisfaction with the Church, Christians, or the truths found in the Bible.

Division - (Psalm 133:1) Satan wants to divide and conquer. He often uses some of the other devices to get people to this point That is why the Bible has so much to say about unity and division (i.e. 1 Cor. 1:10; John 17:20-21).

Distraction - (Nehemiah 6:3) The enemies of Nehemiah tried to distract him from the good work he was doing. Of course, being the leader that he was, he did not fall for this ploy. We have a great work in the Lord's Church, but nothing brings it to a screeching halt as quickly as distraction. Too often we become bogged down in the incidentals of the work. Satan loves to see this happen.

Denial - (2 Thess. 2:11; 2 Cor. 4:3,4) Even Christians can believe a lie when we deny the sin that is in our own lives. I doubt that there is anything that has been more detrimental to the Church than Christians living impure lives.

No, we are not ignorant of the devil's devices. This is only a short list of some of his ways of getting into our lives. We must learn to avoid them.

Danger of Jumping to Conclusions

Are All "Churches of Christ" the Same?

Do you remember the "Bouncer" ads on TV not long ago. It showed what looked like a traditional type of church building, but there was a bouncer keeping some people out while only letting those who looked like a "traditional Christian" in. It was sponsored by the United Churches of Christ. Several people asked me about these commercials. There are several groups that use this name, but we use it mainly as a descriptive designation.

The Universal Church of Christ is a group that is often simply called "universalists." Some if their leaders even signed the Humanist Manifest II. Not much is heard about them today. However, reading John 5:28,29 discredits the universalist doctrine.

The United Church of Christ came to this country in 1620 on the Mayflower to escape religious persecution. We know them better as the Puritans. Later they became know as the "Congregationalists." For most of their history in this country, they pursued unity through interdenominationlism, union, or unity in diversity. They are very ecumenical. Not long ago, the news reported that they had voted 87% in favor of accepting same sex marriages. It appears that they have gone a long way since the days of the puritans.

There is also what we can call the Church of Christ (Instrumental). This is basically the same as the Christian Church. Three distinct religious movements ultimately developed from the restoration movement of the 19th century (i.e., Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and churches of Christ).

Who are we? We simply follow the Bible in all things. This is the only valid basis for religious unity. We believe the old saying, "In matters of faith, unity; in matters of opinion, liberty; and in all things love." When Jesus promised to build "His church" (Matthew 16:18), he was saying it would belong to Him. That is what the phrase "church of Christ" means. It is His church. The Bible refers to the church in a universal sense (as in Mt. 16:18), and also in a local sense (as in "the churches of Christ" in Romans 16:16). You can read about the establishment of this church in Acts 2. This is the fulfillment of Jesus' promise to build it. He paid for it with His own blood (Acts 20:28). Finally, Jesus will present it to the Father one day (Ephesians 5:27). This is the church of Christ.

It takes man and his worldly reasoning to make God's simple plan confusing and difficult to understand. We must forget what man may say and listen to God and His Word. He is the one who sent His Son. Jesus is the one who shed His blood, and only He can save us by His grace. Remember Jesus said, "He that rejects me, and receives not my words, has one that judges him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day (John 12:48).

The Power of Words

Someone once said, "Thoughts are the children of one's brain, and words are the garments they wear. Too many people dress their thoughts with words that make them look like tramps." Solomon said, "Keep thy heart will all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). Words are our tools of communication, and they are powerful. They can wreck homes, destroy lives, ruin businesses, and leave congregations torn asunder. Words stir human emotions and passions to great heights or horrible depths.

Words that hurt include tale bearing (Proverbs 11:13; 16:28; 18:8; 20:19). Some words are not based on facts, such as unjust criticism. Sarcasm or jesting at a serious moment can pierce like a sword (Proverbs 12:18). Even flattery can hurt because by its very nature it is insincere (Proverbs 26:28; 29:5).

On the other hand, there are some words that help. There are healing words (Proverbs 10:11). So many people are longing for healing words today. When passions are high and difficulties arise, stop and think, weigh words, speak and let the answer be a soft one. Some words are uplifting (Proverbs 12:25). They lighten heavy loads. Words need to be spoken in a timely fashion (Proverbs 15:22,23). Saying the right thing at the right time is an art that is learned. Words must also be skillful (Proverbs 25:11,12). The word that is "fitly spoken" is both skillful and valuable.

It takes the right kind of heart to use the right kind of words in the right way and at the right time. This is the heart all Christians must have. No wonder Solomon had so much to say about our words and the way we use them. We must also remember the words the Psalmist, "Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips (Psalm 141:3).

Common Expressions From An Uncommon Book

The Bible is the most influential book in the world. Yet, sometimes even Christians don't realize just how much it has influenced our culture. There are many well known sayings that come directly from the Bible ("A house divided against itself..." Matthew 12; "A little leaven... 1 Corinthians 5:6; "The salt of the earth" Matthew 5:13). Notice some saying most of us have heard, yet, many of us don't realize came from the Bible.

"The Skin of My Teeth"
"My bone cleaves to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth" (Job 19:20). Do you ever feel that life is overwhelming you? Job knows how you feel and then some. He didn't even know how he was still alive. However, God will see us through even though we don't know how.

"A Fly in the Ointment"
"Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so does a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor" (Eccl. 10:1). One moments sin can cause a lifetime of heartache. We must be careful that we don't "sacrifice the day for the hour." Don't let one moment's indiscretion wipe out a lifetime of righteous living.

"A Drop in the Bucket"
"Behold the nations are as a drop of a bucket and are counted as the small dust of the balance; he takes up the isles as a very little thing" (Isaiah 40:15). Here the insignificance of the nations of the earth are compared to the immensity of God. How many times have nations tried to destroy God's people or overthrow God's purpose? The only success the nations ever had was when God allowed it because His people brought it on themselves due to their disobedience. Remember, God is in control and He is able to accomplish His will.

"The Leopard Cannot Change Its Spots"
"Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may you also do good, that are accustomed to do evil" (Jeremiah 13:23). When all is said and done, people are still prone to sin. Temptation plagues us all. Yet, this does not mean man cannot change. It means we will always have the same struggles. Therefore, we must never let our guard down.

"The Apply of My Eye"
This is found in Dueteronomy 32:10, Psalm 17:8, and Proverbs 7:2. The apple is a metaphor for the pupil of the eye, and it is associated with a person or thing that is highly valued. In other words, you are the apple of God's eye, and that means you are precious to Him. We in return must make His law and His will the apple of our eye.

Don't live your life by the "skin of your teeth" because of the "flies in the ointment" of your life. Remember that the powers of this world are but a "drop int he bucket" compared to God's power. Furthermore, just as the "leopard cannot change his spots," we may stumble along the way, but we can always rejoice that we are "the apple of God's eye."

Old Friends

Courtney and I just spent a wonderful short weekend with some old friends (we decided to call each other long-time friends rather than "old" friends). We went to Arkansas to visit Tim and Nancy Head and their family. After going out to eat, we went to see their two youngest sons, Brian and Tyler, play football at their homecoming game. Their oldest son, Jimmy, also came home for the evening from medical school, and we were joined by Nancy's mother, Mrs. Effie. Courtney and I have known Nancy about all our lives, and we have known Tim for over 20 years. It is amazing how we can go 3 or 4 years between visits with this special Christian family and simply pick right up where we left off as if we had seen them yesterday. Times like this make the promise of heaven even sweeter.

Spirituality #3

One of the great dangers any army faces is attrition. Christians can suffer from attrition as well. That is why we can't take spirituality for granted. Today we will take a look at the dangers facing the Christian's spiritual life.

Worldliness or the works of the flesh is a real enemy of spirituality (Galatians 5:16-17). Of course, the flesh and spirit are always at war against one another (Romans 7). Paul even told us that our battle is against "spiritual wickedness" (Ephesians 6:12).

Take a moment to consider some signs of spiritual decline. I found this list in the Brownsville Church of Christ bulletin from when Howell Ferguson was the minister there. I do want to change that list up a little bit. Remember Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck" jokes? Well, I would like to say it this way... You Might Be In Spiritual Decline If...
1. You dislike religious conversations or company of Christians (1 Cor. 15:33).
2. Stay away from worship by willful choice (Heb. 10:25).
3. Worry more about a clean conscience than a clean heart.
4. Fear being called "over-strict" more than honoring Jesus Christ.
5. Trifle with temptation or think lightly of sin (2 Tim. 2:22).
6. Condemn in others what you tolerate in yourself.
7. Impatient and unforgiving toward others (Mt. 6:15).
8. Confess but don't forsake sin.
9. Shrink from self-examination (1 Cor. 13:5).
10. When you "strain out the gnat and swallow the camel."

Just remember, spiritual decline, unabated, will always result in spiritual death. What does it mean to be spiritually dead? It means to have stopped trying. It means to have stopped feeling. It means to have stopped thinking. It means to have stopped repenting. May we do all we can to avoid spiritual decline and spiritual death.

Spirituality #2

In Galatians 6:1, Paul said, "...those who are spiritual...." In the last post, we took a look at what spirituality is not. But, who are these people?

A popular definition of the term is "believing in the unseen realm of spirits and being devoted to a system of feeling and/or acting based on the acceptance of those unseen realities." By this definition, animist or Buddhist who meditate for hours are spiritual. Also, Muslims who want to kill anyone who will not convert to Islam is spiritual. However, the Christian must discover and accept God's meaning for biblical terms. "Spiritual" is the adjective form of the noun "spirit." "Spirit has a very broad usage, such as, breath, wind, angels, feelings, will, demons, the quality of life, and man's inner being. When Jesus gave us a description of God, He said, "God is a spirit" (John 2:24). It is from this particular meaning of spirit as related to God that the term spiritual gets its primary New Testament meaning (One exception is Ephesians 6:12). "Spiritual" means "of, or pertaining to, God." It applies to a number of things reflecting a divine connection: the Law of Moses (Romans 7:14); The gospel (Romans 15:27); Reveled truth (1 Corinthians 2:13, 9:14; Power of miraculous gifts (Romans 1:11); Blessings (Ephesians 1:3); Songs (Ephesians 5:19, Col. 3:16). Throughout the New Testament it is apparent that when an inspired writer wanted to lift the reader to the God standing behind those things which have touched or can touch one's life, he used the term spiritual.

Paul made a distinction between those who are spiritual and those who are babes (1 Corinthians 2:14-3:1). He showed that it is an attitude toward revealed truth (1 Corinthians 14:37). Being spiritual has its reality in objective Bible truth and the manner in which a person opens his heart to it. This is how spirituality comes into one's life. Thus, being spiritual is not only to receive, but to LIVE according to the will of Christ (Galatians 5:19-61). The spiritual person of Galatians 6:1 is one who is busy maturing the qualites of personality possessed by Jesus and expressing them in service.

How can you know when one is spiritual? It is anyone who believes Bible truth and conforms his life to it. The degree to which one meets these criteria determines spirituality. Spirituality is not simply an "emotional high." As a matter of fact, Jesus recognized the fact that we may become tired and emotionally drained (Mark 6:31; 2 Corinthians 1:8, 4:8).

Hebrews 5:12-14 is a key passage to becoming more spiritual. It has to do with work and maturity. There is a need for food (personal Bible study). There is a need for exercise (constant use of what one learns). Of course, we must also claim God's help (Hebrews 4:16).

Imagine two Christians. One does a great deal of talking about the love of God. He gives an impressive discussion of Christianity using beautiful expressions of faith. The other is very quiet. When someone needs help, when one is discouraged, when one needs guidance, when one is wandering away, HE IS THERE! Which of these two is the spiritual person? It is one thing to talk a good game, but spirituality will put these things into practice.

Spirituality #1

In Galatians 6:1, Paul speaks of those who are "spiritual." This indicates that there is a state of being which is called "spiritual." But, what is spirituality? Many don't understand this basic New Testament concept, and therefore, we will take time in the next few posts to discuss it. In order to better understand spirituality, our first study will be a discussion of what it is not.

A spiritual person is not one with warm feelings or great emotions. Yes, emotion is inherent in Christianity, but it is not based on pure emotion (Isaiah 1:18; John 6:44,45; Romans 10:17). Spirituality is also based on learning and reason. We would do well to remember that emotions can't always be trusted because they are not necessarily based on evidence or truth. It is also very easy to manipulate one's emotions.

A spiritual person is not one who does a lot of talking about their own dedication. Some people act as if saying that they are something makes it true. Didn't Jesus condemn those who made a show of their "spirituality" (Matthew 6:7)?

A spiritual person is not one who only keeps negative commands. It is not enough simply to keep the "Thou shalt not's." There is more to obeying Jesus than just not doing some things. There are also things we must do. What about the Great Commission? What about brotherly love (Hebrews 13:1)? What about benevolence (James 1:27)? As Christians, we must take the initiative to do what Christ would have us to do.

A spiritual person does not use some mechanical process to become so. There is not a book or CD on "How to Become Spiritual In Five Minutes a Day." Well there might be, but I would doubt its effectiveness. I once received a letter stating that if I would carry some kind of cross in my pocket, I would prosper spiritually. Of course, they also wanted money. What we need is to get the crosses out of our pockets and into our lives (Luke 9:23). This is a 24/7 proposition.

A spiritual person is not spasmodic in living the Christian life. This is the on again/off again type of Christianity. A spiritually minded person doesn't try to take it on and off like clothes. They don't push a button to turn their spirituality on and off.

A spiritual person is not produced by baptism. Of course, this is when one is added to the body of Christ (Galatians 3:27). This is when one becomes a Christian, but he is also a babe in Christ (1 Peter 2:2). Yes, a Christian is a spiritual being, but growth is necessary (Hebrews 5:12-14).

A spiritual person is not necessarily one who is faithful in attendance. All spiritual people are faithful, but not all faithful people are spiritual. Faithfulness is a stepping stone to spirituality. An individual can be faithful in attendance and unfaithful in living the Christian life.

Finally, a spiritual person is not one who lives without relying on Christ. Even Paul recognized this (Philippians 4:13). We find our strength in Him (Ephesians 6:10). If you want to be spiritual, depend on the Lord.

Just being a good person or even faithful in some aspects of Christianity doesn't make one spiritual. There is so much more to it. My next post will deal with what spirituality is. Have a great day!

Scientology On Trial

A prosecutor in Belgium is charging Scientology as a criminal organization in that country. Click here to read the article. One thing a reader might find helpful is a brief history and explanation of Scientology at the end of the article.

However, as interesting as the article is, it doesn't compare to the comments that follow it. Just scroll down and read what has been posted. It is amazing how much people hate "religion." Especially notice comments numbered 37 and 40. They give an idea of what many of the other comments are saying. These are not representative of all the comments, but they do show a strong tendency against religion as a whole. One person said truth is personal, and, therefore, no one should try to convince anyone else of their truth. Question: Why is he telling us this? Doesn't that violate his own rule that he should not try to convince us that he is right about his "personal truth."

First, unlike some of the people commenting on that article, I don't believe religion (even false religion) should be banned. Why? God even put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the midst of the garden of Eden (Genesis 3). He gave man a choice for a reason. Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating false religion, but I am acknowledging that people must make choices.

Second, a counterfeit always implies that there is a genuine article. In other words, if there are counterfeit religions, there must be a genuine religion. Man has always had a tendency to change God's way of doing things (Proverbs 14:12; Jeremiah 10:23).

Finally, we must get back to simple the Christianity of the New Testament. We need to preach Jesus just like Philip did when he was with the Ethiopian (Acts 8). Of course, that means one must preach all of His Word. The problem that so many have with religion today isn't really with religion in general as much as it is with the religious people who give it a bad name. Thus, we are challenged to be the best Christians we can be so that the world can see what real Christianity is all about (Matthew 5:16).

A Great Day In Doniphan

Bruce was the perfect choice as speaker for the day since he served this congregation two different times. First, he was here in the late 1950's and the early 1970's. It was also good to see so many people who had formerly been members. Here are some pictures from the day.

Indestructible Truth

Nine Steps To Building Relationships

Romans 12 is one of those treasure troves of Bible study. This post focuses on our relationships with "one and another." If we could sum up Romans 12:9-21, it would have to be with the word "love." As a matter of fact, that love among brethren is one of the greatest determining factors when it comes to church growth. Here Paul gives us 9 steps for building relationships with brethren.

1. Be Genuine (vs 9). "Let love be with hypocrisy." When we begin to talk about people in private the way we treat them in public, it will go a long way to building better relationships.

2. Be Careful Of Other's Needs (10). We are to be "affectionate to one another." In other words, we should treat them in a kind and loving way.

3. Be Contagious With Enthusiasm (11). We are to be "fervent in spirit." Ira North use to say "Enthusiasm is as contagious as the measles and as powerful as dynamite."

4. Be Positive, Patient, And Prayerful (12). This is a natural response to verse 11. The only way we can keep rejoicing in hope and being patient in troubles is to continue in prayer.

5. Open Your Heart And Home To Others (13). Hospitable people make life so much more beautiful. Opening one's home is like opening their heart.

6. Never Speak Evil Or Negative Of A Brother (14). "Bless and curse not" does not leave much leeway does it? God has always condemned backbiting and murmuring. This kind of thing can destroy the church.

7. Be Sympathetic To Each Other's Feelings (15). This will help us avoid the problem of indifference toward others.

8. Avoid Pride And Partiality (16). Look around when you are assembled with the church. Is there a member with whom you have a problem associating? Then you may want to work on this area of your life.

9. Let God Handle The Justice (17-21). When we seek revenge, we have to put ourselves in the place of God because we don't have all knowledge in order to truly be just. Another thing about letting God handle the justice is that it forces us to depend completely on Him.

May we always strive to build better relationships in the local church.

Knowing Freedom

Some time ago, I heard a reporter interview a German woman who lived through the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. When asked how she had felt when Germany was "freed" from the Nazi's, she said, "I never knew that I wasn't free until I saw the atrocities committed by the Nazi government." I could not help think of how many people are enslaved to sin and, like that woman, they don't even realize it (Rom. 6:16-18).

Do you remember how the Jews reacted when Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32)? The response went like this, "They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?" (John 8:33). Of course, they did not think about the fact that they had been in bondage to the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks in the past, and were subjects of Rome at that very time! Then again, Jesus was not talking about physical but spiritual bondage. He said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin" (John 8:34).

All of this illustrates that it is possible for us to be or become enslaved by sin (Romans 3:23). We must always be on guard (1 Corinthians 10:12). That is why we must regularly examine ourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). May we never delude ourselves into thinking we have spiritual freedom when we do not. On the other hand, may we ever cherish that truth that will make us free.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!" (Matthew 23:37). These words of Jesus betray how much He loved this city. Just think of how significant this ancient city is. It has had several names such as Salem, Jebus, "The City of David," "The Holy City," Ariel, Aelia Capitolina, and El Kuds. The name Jerusalem is a combination of the names Jebus and Salem. However, I would like to look at three reasons this city is significant to us today.

First, it is significant because of the history that surrounds it. It was first mentioned in Genesis 14:18 as Salem, and later conquered by David (2 Samuel 5:6).Nebuchadnezzar attack and conquered the city three times which ultimately resulted in the Babylonian captivity. Cyrus, king of the Medo-Persian empire issued a decree that allowed the Jews to return to and rebuild Jerusalem. Yet, the greatest period of history for Jerusalem was during the time of Jesus. From the time He went to the temple at the age of 12 till the resurrection, Jesus periodically walked it's streets. Nevertheless, it was destroyed by Titus in A.D. 70.

Second, it is significant because the Lord established His Church there. It was prophesied that this would be done (Isaiah 2:2,3; Zechariah 1:16). Before His ascension, Jesus gave instructions to the apostles concerning upcoming events that would take place there (Luke 24:46-49; Acts 1:8,12). Then on the day of Pentecost, the Church of Christ was established (Acts 2:1-47).

Finally, the greatest reason for the significance of Jerusalem is what it symbolizes for God's people today. Some people still call it a "Holy City," but it is no more holy than any other city. Yet, Christians still sing songs like "On Zion's Glorious Summit," or "We're Marching To Zion." Paul spoke of the "Jerusalem which is above" (Galatians 4:26). The Hebrew writer said, "But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22). Also, let us not forget the Revelation in which John saw the heavenly city (Revelation 21).

Friends, the new Jerusalem means a great deal to everyone who wants to go to heaven!

Internet Watch

I have often said that children should have no privacy when it comes to using the Internet. The Internet is an unbelievably dangerous thing for children and teenagers. While there are some good uses for Internet network communities such as Facebook and My Space, they need to be monitored by parents. My Space recently did a check on its members and found 29,000 sexual offenders using it. Young people can innocently give out sensitive information and they can be manipulated by unsavory people out there. Check out this interesting article on townhall.com by Kevin McCullough. The "3 R's" of the Bible School

Most parents recognize the value of a good education. We want our children to have all the advantages in life that a well rounded education can give them. Of course, "well rounded" means we must be just as concerned about their spiritual education. The three R's are Reading, Riting, and Rithmatic, as they say. Well, there are another three R's for the Bible School.

First, is resolution. Do you remember what Hannah promised God if He would give her a "man child." She promised that she would give the child back to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:11). Today we also should give our children back to the Lord by teaching them. Spiritual teaching should begin in the home, but there is great value in taking them to Bible school as well. Yet, so many people allow even the smallest things to come between their children and real spiritual development. The best way to avoid the neglect of our children's spiritual education is to resolve to go.

Second, is responsibility. We know we are to train up our children (Proverbs 22:6), and to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Where does Bible school fit in to this responsibility? During the past few decades, the demands on the Christian home have multiplied. The Bible school is an organized effort on the part of the local church to provide supplemental Christian training. It offers us an opportunity to study in a social setting among peers and in a larger Christian environment. It provides a structured learning experience, whereas the home is suited to more casual learning. It offers a systematic approach to the study of the Bible which the home often misses. It provides a climate of mutual encouragement. Could Christianity continue without the Bible school? Yes! However, the home would have to undergo some radical changes. So it still all comes back to the responsibility to do the best we can for our children.

Finally, is reward. Consider Timothy. Paul spoke of his genuine faith which first dwelt in his grandmother and mother (2 Timothy 1:5). He spoke of how he had known the scriptures from childhood (2 Timothy 3:15). Can you imagine the reward of these two precious ladies? Just knowing what kind of young man Timothy had become was their reward. My wife has written "Goal" in her Bible next to 3 John 4. This verse says, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth." This should be every Christian parent's goal. And if it is, it will also become your greatest reward!

Are you taking full advantage of the spiritual opportunities available for your children? Are you showing them a good and positive example? Remember there are wonderful Christians who diligently prepare for the Bible classes they teach. More goes into this than most people know. Make your children's spiritual welfare the goal of your life and let the Bible school help.

A Lesson From A Bluebird

Tonight Courtney and I were sitting on the back porch and saw two bluebirds dive-bombing our little dog, Sadie. At first we thought it was funny, but then we realized that the birds were only trying to protect a baby with fell from the nest. Sadie didn't have a clue about the baby and was too busy jumping around avoiding the aerial attacks. Then she spotted the baby about the same time we did. Of course, we called her into the house and tried to help the little bird.

As I thought about what had happened, I realized how important it is for us as Christians to do the same thing for brothers and sisters who are in spiritual danger. Obviously, at least one of the dive bomber bluebirds was a parent of the baby, but the principle is still the same.

Why is it that we are so quick to kick those who are down? All to often a weak Christian falls away or is in the process of falling, and there are brethren who will attack them. Shouldn't we do just the opposite? I don't mean we should condone sinful behavior, but we should do all we can to lovingly protect them. We all know there are times our attempts to help will be futile. However, that does not exempt us from trying to save them (Romans 15:1). It is such a blessing to have a part in saving a soul from death (James 5:19-20).

Vacation Bible School

Our VBS ended Wednesday evening. This year we had nine rooms or learning centers. Each evening guests went to three rooms and to "The Land of Milk and Honey" for refreshments. The theme was "The Wisdom and Power of Jesus" and dealt with the miracles and parables of our Lord. Here are some pictures from Doniphan's 2007 VBS.

Obey God, Not Men

There have always been pressures on those who preach the gospel to twist or change it in some way to make it more palatable for the world. Some go as far as simply remaining silent where the Bible is not silent. The recent advent of "Hate Speech" laws have been used by some to silence the preaching of the Bible. In Canada, it is no longer "legal" to call homosexuality a sin. A lawmaker in Oregon recently tried to pass a similar law for that state. Australia's "hate speech" laws were used to stop two denominational preachers from quoting the Quran when they were lecturing on Islam . However, the two are now allowed to quote the Quran once again.

Preaching is not always an easy thing to do. God told the prophet, Ezekiel, "Like adamant stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not be afraid of them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house" (Ezekiel 3:9). John the Immerser (Baptist), lost his head for speaking out against the sin of Herod and Herodias (Mark 6:16-18). Of course, the apostles were often warned against preaching Jesus, but their response was, “We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29).

These examples may seem far removed by either distance or time, but this still happens anywhere the gospel is preached. It may be extremely subtle, but it happens. May we all, as Christians, lovingly and bravely stand unflinchingly on the Word of God.

What About The Child?

I just read a heart wrenching story of a child who has been in foster care for 8 years, but the court has now taken the child away and given her back to the biological parents . The biological parents gave up the girl when she was an infant and she was with her foster family from that time until now. These custody cases can become very complicated, but it seems the needs of the children often tend to get lost in the process.

As horrible as these situations are, they can't even compare to the tragedy of spiritual neglect of our children. I fear that so many parents have become so caught up in their children's education, sports, piano lessons, clubs, etc., that they don't have time to put the proper emphasis on the child's spiritual development.

Please don't let "life" get in the way of meeting the real needs of the children. They deserve our attention and must be recognized as the priority that they are. Their spiritual welfare must come first.

I can't believe it happened. Last week I was asked for my Drivers License number and the expiration date. I dutifully gave the number, and then I was shocked when I saw that my license had expired in August of 2006. The state always sent a post card that notified me that it was about time to renew my license before. After my wife drove me home, I called to find out what I had to do. A large fine would have been better than the news they gave me. Since it had been more than six months, I had to take all the driving tests again. In the past several years, I have moved to Missouri twice. Therefore, I had already taken the written test twice. But, this time I had to take the road test just like I was 16 years old! The test is only offered once every two weeks in Doniphan, and fortunately, they were offering it the next day. I became legal again early that morning. Through all of this, several lessons came to mind.

1. Even those who are trying to do the right thing can unknowingly do something wrong (Psalm 19:12 "Cleanse me from secret faults").

2. Although the state did not send a notification, I am still personally responsible for making sure my license is up to date. In the same way, we are all responsible for the status of our own souls (1 Corinthians 5:10 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad").

3. Don't wait for someone else to tell you what you should do. Take the initiative (Acts 17:11 "These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so").

4. Just as I should have looked at "what is written" on my drivers license, we should all look at what is written in God's Word (1 Corinthians 4:6 "And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written").

5. There is an expiration date for this world, and then comes the judgment (John 5:28-29 "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation").

By the way, you may want to take a moment to check you drivers license, but more importantly always check out God's Word.

Homosexual Leader Leaves Movement

Michael Glatze, editor of Young Gay America, has exited the homosexual lifestyle. He has written a column for World Net Daily explaining his decision. There is also another article about this news on WND.

Glatze attributed this change to inner "promptings" which WND says he attributes to God. Paul spoke of what one could call "inner promptings" in Romans 2:15 saying "...who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them...." It is evident that Glatze's conscience was at work and that he maintained a sincere heart.

The implications of this move are very interesting. For example, if one is born homosexual, how can they become heterosexual? Of course, those in the gay movement will deny that anyone can really change. As a matter of fact, they will probably do everything they can to discredit Michael Glatze.

The articles linked above also give us some insight into the emotional and psychological pressures brought to bear on those who have accepted the gay lifestyle. Glatze wrote, "Homosexuality, delivered to young minds, is by its very nature pornographic. It destroys impressionable minds and confuses their developing sexuality; I did not realize this, however, until I was 30 years old." There are many other significant insights in his article.

Of special interest is one particular comment made by Glatze. "In my experience, 'coming out' from under the influence of the homosexual mindset was the most liberating, beautiful and astonishing thing I've ever experienced in my entire life."

Gaining a Son-In-Law -- or Two!

This is just an update about some of our family news. July 13, David Galloway and our youngest daughter Susan will be married. Susan is a senior Theater major at Freed-Hardeman University. David has been hired as the technical director for the FHU Theater department. After one year, they plan to go to graduate school.

Our oldest daughter, Dianne, and her fiancee', Derek, are planning to be married on November 16 of this year. That's right, two weddings in four months! Of course, we are excited about both of them.

The field of medical technology has given us blessings and horrors simultaneously. The recent Terri Schiavo case illustrates how volatile medical ethics can be. Well, now there is another case that has a different ending. A man has come out of a coma after several nine months . The interesting thing is that his wife wanted to remove his feeding tubes after 10 days based on a doctor's diagnosis that he was in a "persistent vegetative state" (PVS). His family fought the wife's decision and won. He then came out of the coma a few weeks later.

We must not allow the "culture of death" to corrupt our society. Life is precious!

Homosexual Deception

The battle against the works of darkness never ends. I just ran across this article which tells about a Maryland school board's attempt to indoctrinate children with misinformation concerning homosexuality.

We live in an increasingly dangerous society. It is especially critical that we not only take our children to school, but that we also keep up with the things to which they are exposed. As a matter of fact, a child's primary teachers are his/her parents. Mom, Dad, you have to keep yourself informed in order to counter the evil influences your children do encounter almost daily.

For example, the following excerpts are taken from "The Marketing of Evil" by David Kupelian.

1. In February 1988 some 175 leading activists representing homosexual groups from across the nation held a war conference in Warrenton, VA to map out their movement's future. Shortly thereafter, activists Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen put into book form the comprehensive public relations plan they had been advocating with their gay-rights peers for several years.... Together they wrote "After the Ball: How America Will Conquer its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the '90s (23).

2. They admitted that their campaign "depends centrally upon a program of unabashed propaganda, firmly grounded in long-established principles of psychology and advertising" (24).

3. If "environmental factors' are involved -- and everyone knows they are, whether or not they publicly admit it -- why then advise homosexuals to claim they were "born gay"? "To suggest in public that homosexuality might be chosen," Kirk and Madsen explain, "is to open the can of worms labeled 'moral choices and sin' and give the religious intransigents a stick to beat us with. Straights must be taught that it is as natural for some persons to be homosexual as it is for others to be heterosexual: wickedness and seduction have nothing to do with it" (34).

4. They wrote, "It makes no difference that the ads are lies, not to us, because we're using them to ethically good effect, to counter negative stereotypes that are every bit as much lies, and far more wicked ones" (28).

These are only a few short excerpts from one chapter of Kupelians book, but they reveal what we are up against. This and other liberal social issues are driven by lies and misinformation. Sexual Purity

In a new study from the CDC, statistics show that only 11 percent of never married adults have remained sexually chaste until their weddings. There are many disturbing results from this study which can be seen in this AP article . It is no secret that we live in a sex crazed society.

I'm afraid that too many Christians have simply given up on purity among our teens. I have heard some parents try to absolve themselves of their responsibility in this matter by saying, "Kids will be kids." I have seen heartbroken, distraught parents in shock when they learn that their teenage daughter is pregnant or cohabitating. Yet, just a few months before, they were defending the practices of inappropriate dancing, "mixed swimming," which involves immodest clothing, and other worldly practices. Bottom line -- one of the main reasons we are having such a problem with teen sex today is the inappropriate attitudes of adults toward sex outside of marriage. Why is there a double standard between teens and adults when it comes to sexual behavior?

If there is a lesson in the statistics for Christians today, it is that we must not shy away from preaching and teaching in the pulpit and in the home against premarital and extramarital sex.

Global Cooling?

Are You Really Free?

We are proud to live in the "land of the free and the home of the brave." However, as Christians, we realize this question of freedom goes deeper than mere civil liberty. Are you really free?

Freedom must be properly defined. Of course, there are different types of freedom. Today, many refer to "financial freedom" and "freedom of choice." Yet, most people think of freedom as mere license to do anything they wish. There are some who are so enthralled with sin that they don't even realize that the same sin has enslaved them. When Jesus told the Jews that they would "know the truth and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32), they laughed at Him. They said they had never been in bondage to any man. They obviously forgot they were under Roman rule at that time. Yet, Jesus was talking about freedom from sin. Cf. Romans 6:16-23; 1 Corinthians 7:20-22; 6:12-13, 19-20.

Freedom is obtained only by sacrifice. Can you think of any example of a people who obtained freedom without sacrifice? Rush Limbaugh Jr., the father of the well-known talk show host, often gave a speech entitled "The Americans Who Risked Everything." In this address, he told the stories of many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He summed up the sacrifices they made by saying, "Of those who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor, and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact." If you can find a copy of this speech online, it will be well worth your time to read it. Cf. Galatians 5:1; Acts 22:28; Romans 8:2.

Freedom must be desired. The signers of the Declaration of Independence could have lived out their lives in relative peace and prosperity, but instead they desired freedom enough to sacrifice for it. Sometimes people don't know what to do with freedom once they have it. This can be seen in the differences between the American and French revolutions. The American Revolution resulted in a great and powerful nation. The French Revolution resulted in a period of French history call "The Terror." It appears the leaders of that revolution desired freedom, but they also desired their own personal interest even more. Keep in mind that anyone who really desires spiritual freedom can have it, but it will not happen if that person desires other things in life even more.

Unfortunately, freedom can be forfeited. We can throw it away. It has happened many times throughout history. May we never take our freedoms, both physical and spiritual, for granted.

Don't Lose Your Head!

Things are not always as they first seem. An example of this can be found in Mark 6:14-28 where we read about the beheading of John the Baptist. Mark records how John had spoken out against the adulterous relationship between Herod and Herodias, and they had him thrown into prison. Herodias would have had John killed, but Herod regarded him as a just and holy man and so he would not allow it. Then, on Herod's birthday, Salome, the daughter of Herodias, danced for Herod and it pleased him so much that he offered her anything she wanted. Salome asked her mother what she should do. Herodias told her to ask for John's head in a charger. This Herod did reluctantly because he had given his word and did not want to shame himself in front of his guests. Then John was beheaded. Here's a question for you. Who lost their head?

First, Herod lost his head. He lost it because he allowed himself to be controlled by pleasure (Mark 6:21-26). Herod didn't plan to lose his head that day, but it is easy to do in the "heat of the moment" when we are unprepared. Herod shows us we must always be on guard.

Second, Herodias lost her head. She lost her head because of a bad attitude. She was full of animosity and hate. She was defensive and vindictive. These things can destroy your life. Herodias' heart had to be a black as midnight to ask for the murder of a man just because he told the truth.

Third, Salome lost her head. This happened because she let somone else do her thinking for her. When the time comes to give an account for what she did, she cannot transfer personal responsibility for her part in this inhumanity to her mother. Remember, when you let someone else make your decisions, you don't even need your own head. You have already lost it. Someone once said, "There are two ways to go through life -- believe everything and believe nothing." God gave you a head so you can use it.

Herod, Herodias, and Salome all lost their heads. It was caused by pleasure, hate, and not thinking for oneself. As a matter of fact, the only person in this biblical story who kept his head was the one whose head was cut off. John stayed true to God and his values to the end of his life even though it cost him his life. When Satan comes tempting you, will you lose your head or keep it?

The Myth of Quality Time

Back in the 1990's, we heard a much about spending "quality time" with our children. Of course, this quality time is a good thing, but it is no substitute for "quantity time." Many parents used the myth of "quality time" to justify neglecting their children so they could spend more time at work to make more money or spending time away from their children for recreation or other selfish interests. They would give their children 10 or 15 minutes of undivided attention and delude themselves into thinking that is all the parenting their children needed.

Parents need to spend quantity time with their children as well as quality time. A recent study indicates that children who spend a significant amount of time in daycare are more anti-social than those who spend more time at home with a parent. You can read more about it in this article .

Why is this the case? The answer lies in the fact that parents are role models for their children. Children learn how to relate to other people by observing their parents. In other words, they learn how adults are suppose to act by watching us especially when we don't realize they are watching! They see how we react to the various situations of life. We don't realize they are watching, but they learn at these times. Actually, they may learn more during the non-quality moments of life. Mom, Dad, your children need your time and plenty of it!

Possible Break Through In Stem Cells

Scientists have used ordinary skin cells in mice and caused them to act like embryonic stem cells. If this can be replicated with human skin cells, it will make the destruction of unborn babies unnecessary for embryonic stem cell research. To read more about it, just click here.

If this does work, I wonder if those bent on the destruction of human embryos will actually stop. Will they find another reason to do research on human embryos? Keep in mind, there have never been any promising results from embryonic stem cell research. The use of adult stem cells, on the other hand, have been very beneficial, but it does not require the killing of an embryo (baby). Let us pray that this new procedure works out!

Islam: A Religion of the Flesh?

I had never heard of this one, but Islam has a practice called "sigheh." You can read about it in this article from The Scotsman. This is a practice that is known as "temporary marriage" which is supported by the Shia but not the Sunni Muslims in Iran. The sigheh marriages can be entered for any length of time between one hour and 99 years according to the article. Those who advocate this practice do so to accommodate the sexual desires of the unmarried. Some say it will solve the problem of prostitution. Extra-marital and premarital sex is a crime in Islam and carries serious punishments. Therefore, supporters think this will put a stop to many of these crimes.

It is interesting to me that a religion that touts purity and severe punishment for impurity can simply legalize fornication. This is simply more evidence that Islam is a religion of the flesh.

The real purity that Jesus, the Son of God taught and commands is from the heart (Matthew 15:19). Real purity is does not try to rationalize imaginary "loop holes." Human beings can control their sexual desires (Phil 4:8, 13). Christianity does not give only lip-service to the practice of purity; real Christians deny unholy lusts and follow Christ (Luke 9:23). The Lord's kingdom is spiritual in nature, and therefore, rules in the souls of men. The contrast between Christianity and Islam is abundantly clear.

The Advertising Principle

Madison Avenue has become a symbol of the advertising industry since the 1920's. Advertising is a huge business involving print, television, radio, the Internet, and much more. Any business that wants to grow takes it's advertising very seriously. The Church is no different.

What exactly is the greatest advertising strategy for the local church? Is it a big sign out front? Is it having ads in the local paper and on the local radio station? What about mass mailings? All of these are wonderful tools, but they pale in comparison to Jesus' plan for advertising. He said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34,35). Love -- so simple, yet, so powerful!

We can have the most impressive signs, the best articles in the papers, the most interesting commercials on the radio or television, and the largest quantity mass mailing in history, but without love, it means nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). If you want to give your local congregation the greatest advertising boost it can have, just love your neighbor as yourself. As John, the Apostle, approach the end of his life, it was said that he had to be carried about on a litter. At that point in his life, considering all the things he could have said, he would always preach the same five word sermon -- "Little children, love one another!"

The Ripple Effect

Zheng Xiaoyu is a name we don't hear everyday. He is the former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration. He had been sentenced to death for taking around $800,000 from pharmaceutical companies. This may seem like a harsh sentence for the abuse of his position of authority and bribery. However, there is more to it than just the illegal aspect of his crime. Xiaoyu's criminal behavior became evident on the heels of the recent pet food poisoning of thousands of pets around the world. Of course, as attached as we are to our pets that would hardly be a justification for a death sentence even in China. The fact is Xiaoyu also approved a number of drugs and devices for use on humans that killed many people. These people died because of his covetousness and greed. Although his crimes were committed on the other side of the world many people were affected. He did not know these people and most may never know how he touched their lives in such a horrible way.

It is amazing how our actions have an impact on the lives of other people. This influence not only reaches those we know. It reaches those we don't know. It goes so far that people we have never met may be changed. Influence is a powerful thing. It has a ripple effect. Just as a stone dropped in the middle of a calm, still pool of water sends multiple ripples out from the source of the disturbance in the water, our influence ripples out into the lives of unsuspecting souls all around us. Sadly, there are those who don't care how their actions can hurt other people. They are only concerned with their own selfish interest. On the other hand, we have the potential to positively influence those same people if we will live our lives selflessly and righteously. We can add flavor to the lives of untold multitudes if we will allow the salt of a godly influence to permeate and preserve our lives. We can drive the darkness of sin and ignorance out of our little part of the world by being the lights God intends us to be (Matthew 5:13-16). Remember, your good influence has a ripple effect.

The Christian's Memorial Day

Monday we will celebrate Memorial Day to honor the fallen soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. Then the sixth of June will be the anniversary of the invasion of Normandy in WWII. This was the greatest military operation ever undertaken. It involved thousands of ships and over a million men. Within 11 months and one day of the invasion (May 7, 1945), Germany signed an unconditional surrender. There was a major difference between Hitler's invasion of France and the Allied invasion on June 6, 1944. Hitler's purpose was to conquer, but the Allies' purpose was to set free.

Against the backdrop of Memorial Day and the anniversary of D-Day, it would be good for us to also remember our bondage and liberation from sin, and the price paid for our freedom.

Sin started in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-6), and man became enslaved in it (Romans 6:16). Of course, sin still enslaves today. It burdens us with guilt, hardness of heart, helplessness, and hopelessness.

It is interesting that when we are set free from sin, we become servants to Another (2 Corinthians 5:14). "But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness" (Romans 6:17-18).

What is the Christian's Memorial Day? "This do in remembrance of Me" (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Our Memorial Day takes place on the first day of every week (Acts 20:7). We need to remember that freedom can be lost (Isaiah 59:1,2; 2 Peter 1:10). We also need to remember that we have been liberated from the guilt of sin by obedience (Romans 6:17). This "liberation" came at a dreadful cost (Acts 20:28; Eph. 5:25). We must remember the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is also a reminder to examine ourselves. Have I drifted? In view of His sacrifice, am I giving of myself and my means properly? Do I need to come back to the Lord?

Some of the bloodiest fighting on D-Day took place at Omaha beach all those years ago. There is a guest book at the American cemetery there in which a guest once wrote "The price of freedom." That says it all. Yet, that sacrifice in a small way illustrates the great sacrifice Jesus made on Calvary's cross by the shedding of His blood. Have you been washed in the blood?

When we love someone or something, we cannot stay away. That is what love is all about. I can't help but wonder why so many Christians don't want to worship God or assemble with brethren every chance they get. Could the reason be the lack of love? Neglecting to worship God every chance we have indicates something about our hearts. It shouts out the secret that we lack love for Jesus and for His Church. Michelle Boorman said the reason she did not miss a day of school in 14 years was not a secret -- she loved school. Do you love the Lord and His Church?
